Open Letter of Indonesian Civil Society Coalition to the President of the Republic of the Minister of Trade Number 15 of 2020 Concerning Provision on the Export of Forestry Products Industry
The Coalition of Indonesia Civil Society send an open letter to Presiden Joko Widodo, showing their concern about the current policy from the Ministry of Trade. The Ministry issued regulation Number 15/2020 that tries to eliminate V-Legal Requirements for the provision export of the forestry product industry.
The coalition emphasizes the importance of V-Legal to promote excellent and sustainable forest governance. The regulation eliminating the requirement of the SVLK-based Legal-V Document for exporting forestry industry products contradicts existing laws and agreements, including the Prevention and Eradication of Forest Destruction Act and the Forest Law Enforcement and Governance-Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT-VPA) with the European Union. The coalition argues that revoking or revising this regulation is necessary to protect forest governance, prevent legal uncertainty, honour international agreements, maintain export competitiveness, and preserve the reputation of Indonesian wood products. They request an audience with the President to discuss their concerns and propose revisions to the regulation.
