Sonokeling in Peril; CITES Protection Versus Illicit Trade of Indonesian Rosewood

Sonokeling is a tree species that belongs to the Dalbergia genus. This tree species is known for its high economic value. Sonokeling wood is often used as a material for making furniture, musical instruments, floor veneers, etc. China is the main export destination for this species.

In 2017, Sonokeling was included in Appendix II of CITES. It means that rosewood can be traded. However, the trade must be regulated so this wood species remains sustainable.

In Indonesia, rosewood is not a protected species. However, the circulation and trade of rosewood must still fulfil legality requirements as stated in the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No.8 of 2021.

Kaoem Telapak’s report shows the dynamics of the rosewood trade, the battle between enforcement of CITES regulations versus the illegal timber trade, the challenges faced in preventing illegal logging, and recommendations to improve the protection and sustainable management of rosewood.
