Civil Society Coalition Calls for Jokowi to Revoke MoT Regulation 15/2020
On February 27, 2020, the Indonesia Ministry of Trade issued Ministry Regulation Number 15/2020 about Export Provisions for Products of the Forestry Industry. The regulation eliminates V-Legal requirements for the export of forest products. The Government claims the policy aims to increase the effectiveness of Indonesia’s timber exports. They add that relaxing the V-Legal requirement will help Indonesia’s economy from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, Indonesia Civil Society Organizations disagree. The Government’s claim is baseless. V-Legal requirements are necessary to ensure timber’s legality and its derivative product. Abu Meridian of Kaoem Telapak said the policy would ruin Indonesia’s reputation as a pioneer in reforming timber trading. Thus, the policy will harm Indonesia’s forest industry instead.
