Letter on the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and Recommendations from the Indonesian Civil Society Organization EUDR Coalition

The letter from the Indonesian Civil Society Organisation EUDR Coalition to the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee addresses concerns about the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The coalition highlights the need for subnational and commodity-specific benchmarking to reflect local realities, especially following plans for large-scale deforestation in Papua. They urge the EU to protect primary forests, meaningful inclusion of smallholders, safeguarding of labour rights under the precarious Omnibus Law on Job Creation, and recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ participation

The letter emphasizes the importance of technical and financial assistance for smallholders to meet compliance standards. It also discusses the threats to Indonesia’s forests under new administration, including plans to clear land for bioethanol production and agriculture, which endanger natural forests and Indigenous lands. The coalition notes issues of corruption, weak supply chain traceability, and ongoing land conflicts, calling for stronger law enforcement and community rights protection.
