Traces of Agus Sumantri’s Legacy in Pekandangan Village: An Eulogy from a Friend

Written by: Muhammad Sidik

One Sad News

On the morning of Tuesday, July 30, 2024, I prepared for a trip to Pekandangan Village with a heavy heart and full of sadness. The sad news I received through the Kaoem Telapak Lampung WhatsApp group the day before informed me that Agus Sumantri, one of our best members, had passed away. His loss left a deep void in our hearts, and memories of his struggle and dedication now feel even more precious.

We visited the residence of the late Agus Sumantri to offer our condolences to his family. Jaka, Pramono, Ade Ma’mun, and I were representing Kaoem Telapak to express our deep sorrow for the passing of our friend, Agus.

Our arrival was warmly welcomed by Agus’ wife, Nur, although the atmosphere was still full of sadness. Nur gratefully expressed her high appreciation for the attention and support from Kaoem Telapak. In this emotional moment, we shared memories and appreciation for the great contribution Agus has made to the community in Pekandangan Village.

We commit to continuing the struggle and spirit that Agus has instilled in Pekandangan Village. His courage and dedication will inspire us to continue working for the common good. With deep respect and condolences, we hope that Agus’ family can find strength and comfort in this time of loss.

First Met

I have known Agus since 2008. We first met during a forest conservation event in Pekandangan Village, located at the foothills of the Register 39 protected forest in Central Lampung District. Agus was a youth leader, who had a big vision to develop his village.

At that time, the road to the village was rocky and slippery. We crossed the Seputih River using a suspension bridge to his village. The rough terrain made the journey challenging and risky. However, Agus’ enthusiasm never waned. He played an important role in establishing Binatara FM Community Radio in the village, even with limited electricity. The radio is an important tool to sensitize the community on the need for forest protection and conservation development.

The Legacy

Now, 15 years have passed. Pekandangan Village has changed a lot. The rocky road was repaired, making access to the village much easier and more comfortable. The legacy of Agus’ collective work with the community can be seen in every corner. The isolated town grew, reflecting the passion and dedication instilled by Agus.

Thanks to Agus’ encouragement and inspiration, the villagers actively participate in various development projects. Farms that once produced little are now more abundant, thanks to better farming techniques and knowledge shared by Agus. The community can process and make forest products such as palm sugar, instant ginger, and areca nut coffee. These products not only increase income but also strengthen the village’s economic resilience.

All these changes are clear evidence of the legacy left by Agus Sumantri. His persistence in encouraging the community to continue learning and working together has changed the face of Pekandangan Village. Now, every corner of the village tells the story of Agus’ struggle and dedication, which despite his passing, his spirit lives on and inspires every step of development in the area. The Pekandangan community is committed to continuing Agus’ struggle, preserving the legacy he has planted, and moving forward towards a brighter future.

Carrying on the Spirit

The news of his sudden passing made us feel a deep sense of loss. Along the way, I reflected on Agus’ struggle and memories with him. My visit to Agus’ home in Pekandangan Village was a form of last respect and support for his family. Agus has inspired and encouraged many people to develop their village. His persistence and dedication will continue to motivate us to keep his good legacy.

Although he is gone, his legacy will live on in the hearts of the people of Pekandangan Village and our every step forward. Agus Sumantri has planted seeds of change that continue to grow, bringing hope and a better future to the village he loves. With his spirit continuing to inspire, we pledge to continue this fight for the honour and legacy of a true hero.
