Harmony between Conservation and Economic Prosperity

Maintaining forest sustainability while committing to improving the welfare of forest communities is not an unattainable goal. Through relentless education and a persuasive approach, Adhi Masturiana, a member of Kaoem Telapak from Lampung, seeks to maintain harmony between conservation efforts and economic enhancement for local communities.

Adhi Masturiana, a resident of South Lampung, serves as a forestry extension agent in the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park. His journey began in 2009 when he first encountered Kaoem Telapak, then known simply as Telapak, prior to becoming a civil servant.

His engagement with Kaoem Telapak sparked an interest that led him to join and participate in the organisation’s cadre development process. “It was enjoyable to gather, discuss ideas, and instil values of environmental awareness,” Adhi remarked. By 2010, he was officially inducted as a member.

The primary challenge Adhi faces in his region is the rampant encroachment on National Park land. Many local residents have resorted to clearing forest areas, resulting in not only environmental degradation but also increased conflict with wildlife, such as tigers and elephants.

Adhi recounted an incident where a guard post was set ablaze by an angry crowd. The unrest was sparked by an attack from a Sumatran tiger that resulted in casualties, while the forest authorities had yet to capture the animal. “Conflicts between humans and wildlife are particularly difficult. Mediating these issues with residents is challenging, but fortunately, the instigator of the arson was apprehended,” Adhi noted.

As a forestry counsellor, Adhi aims to prevent local residents from engaging in illegal logging or further encroachment. He conducts counselling sessions twice a week in various villages, opting for a persuasive and humanistic approach. Over the past decade, this strategy has resulted in relatively peaceful conditions, with no significant violent conflicts between residents and the National Park authorities.

Adhi firmly believes that through education and the appropriate approach, communities can coexist with nature without causing harm. “The key is to foster awareness and present alternatives that can enhance their quality of life,” he explained.

One of Adhi’s initiatives to offer alternatives involves the production of coffee and honey. Alongside his colleagues, he provides technical training, skill enhancement, and encourages environmental conservation. “The objective is to reduce the community’s reliance on direct forest products while preserving natural resources,” Adhi stated.

Joining Kaoem Telapak has enriched Adhi’s experience in collaboration with various stakeholders. Looking ahead, he expresses a desire for deeper synergy with Kaoem Telapak on community empowerment initiatives. “I hope we can continue to work closely, maintain our connections, and ensure everyone’s well-being,” Adhi concluded.
