On September 23, 2025, the European Union (EU) Environment Commissioner announced a proposal to postpone the European Union Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) for 12 months, starting on December 31 2025.
This may potentially mark EUDR’s second delay since its first postponement that occurred from December 2024 until December 30, 2025.
Through a conference video published on the EU Commission’s website, the EU Environment Commissioner, Jessika Roswall stated that the inadequate Information Technology (IT) system was the reason behind the EUDR’s potential second postponement.
Furthermore, she emphasized that this postponement was necessary to avoid any uncertainty among the authorities, to mitigate any operational issues faced by stakeholders in the EU or third-world countries, and to fix a number of risks that they identified.
If the second delay is implemented by the EU Commission, then this will mark the worst decision in the history of the EU’s commitment for sustainability.
Not only will it call into question their Green commitment in eradicating deforestation, but also set a damaging precedent for the EU’s global action and its commitment to save the global forest.
Therefore, Kaoem Telapak believes that this statement signifies a serious setback that raises further doubts concerning the EU’s commitment in suppressing global deforestation due to importing forest commodities from numerous countries into the EU market. Within the context of Indonesia, the forest commodities exported to the EU are cacao, coffee, palm oil, rubber, and woods.
Kaoem Telapak Senior Campaigner, Denny Bhatara stated, “The EUDR is a progressive market policy that may potentially save millions of global forests from deforestation. As such, the potential postponement of its implementation for the second time is something that we cannot justify as this may mark a serious setback. If their reason to postpone it is due to an inadequate system, then it should still be possible for them to implement EUDR while perfecting it systematically and sustainably along the way.”
He further emphasized, “As the power of the global economy, the European Union needs to manifest a real commitment towards sustainability. Do not postpone the implementation of EUDR any further.“
