Indonesia can Achieve Its Climate Commitment Goals by Extending the Palm Oil Moratorium.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) report, the leading cause of the climate crisis comes from human activities. One of the human activities that worsens climate change in the world is land conversion into agricultural industries. The expansion of oil palm plantations in Indonesia significantly contributes to land conversion in this country.

Seeing this reality, one of the positive steps taken by the Indonesian government is the palm oil moratorium policy through Presidential Instruction No. 8 of 2018 concerning the Postponement and Evaluation of Palm Oil Plantation Licensing and Increasing Palm Oil Plantation Productivity. The fundamental message of this policy is the temporary suspension of new permits for palm oil plantations. However, in September 2021, this policy ended.

Conceptually, this policy is very strategic. Unfortunately, the implementation is less optimal. Hence, extending the period from this policy is crucial for completing and accelerating improvement in Indonesian palm oil governance.
